  13. My setup: A1200, 1230XA (50mhz 68030) + 16 megs fast, No SS keyfile
  14. yet (currently using the AddBuffers trick)

  16. MacPPP starts up fine with a 28.8 connection (MacTCP serial port
  17. setting is at 28.8; I tried 57.6 at someone's suggestion, but my
  18. connect script stopped working).

  20. When I start up Netscape, it takes about 50 seconds to fully get the
  21. Netscape homepage (which, with on the same machine, mlink/Amosaic gets
  22. it in about 10).

  24. I would have thought that this would be the one exception to the
  25. slowness problem due to an emulated OS; that my modem, with its 28.8
  26. connection, would transfer information mostly independent of my
  27. A1200.

  29. By mostly, I mean that the actual downloading part would happen as
  30. fast as my modem could handle it, but it still needs to send the data
  31. through my serial port, which needs to be read using cycles of my
  32. A1200's CPU.  Of course, this is just my speculation; I don't know if
  33. this is actually how it works (that's why I'm posting this ;) )

  35. I'm running with the 512K Mac ROM, with a color desktop (the monitor
  36. preferences say 256 colors, but it only seems like 16 to me).  Same
  37. results if I run with greyscale, though.

  39. Can anyone say if there is a reason for this slowness, or is it just
  40. that my system is just not powerful enough to run Netscape at a
  41. reasonable speed?

  43. Also, does anyone know how to get rid of that annoying "AppleTalk
  44. device driver not found" message that comes up whenever you start SS?
